NZ Government Expands English Language Requirements for More AEWV Roles
New Zealand is tightening its immigration settings again, this time by extending English language requirements to more Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) applicants.
From 1 June 2026, migrants applying for AEWV roles classified at ANZSCO or National Occupation List (NOL) Skill Level 3 will need to demonstrate a minimum standard of English. Until now, these requirements mainly applied to Skill Level 4 and 5 positions.
The change will affect a wide range of occupations, including many roles in hospitality, trades, manufacturing, transport, and other mid-skilled sectors that have traditionally attracted overseas workers.
What Is Changing?
Immigration New Zealand says applicants for Skill Level 3 AEWV jobs will now need to show they can “speak and understand English” through approved pathways such as:
- Citizenship from an English-speaking country
- English-language study qualifications
- Work experience in English-speaking environments
- Recognised English test results such as IELTS
The required benchmark remains IELTS 4.0 (or equivalent), which is considered a basic functional level of English.
According to Immigration Minister Erica Stanford, the goal is to help migrant workers better understand their rights, improve workplace communication, and integrate more successfully into New Zealand communities.
Why This Matters
This is a significant policy shift because Skill Level 3 roles make up a large portion of New Zealand’s migrant workforce pipeline. Employers may need to place greater emphasis on recruitment screening and English-language preparedness before hiring offshore workers.
For migrants, the change means English ability is becoming increasingly important, even for roles previously considered exempt from language testing.
Transitional Arrangements
There is some relief for current AEWV holders already in New Zealand.
Immigration New Zealand confirmed that migrants whose visas expire on or before 1 December 2026 may be exempt from the new English requirement when applying for another Skill Level 3 AEWV to complete the remainder of their maximum stay period.
Importantly, the English requirement will not apply to:
- Job change applications
- Global Workforce Seasonal Visas
- Peak Seasonal Visas
Part of a Bigger Immigration Reset
The new language rules are part of a broader series of AEWV reforms introduced over the past two years.
Recent changes have included:
- Expansion of the National Occupation List (NOL)
- Updated median wage thresholds
- Reduced work experience requirements for some migrants
- Changes to visa durations and family sponsorship rules
Together, these reforms signal a stronger focus on skilled migration quality, workforce integration, and long-term labour market planning.
What Migrants and Employers Should Do Now
If you are planning to apply for an AEWV in a Skill Level 3 occupation after 1 June 2026, it is important to:
- Confirm whether your role falls under the new requirement
- Prepare acceptable English evidence early
- Check whether you qualify for an exemption or transitional arrangement
For employers, now is the time to review recruitment processes and ensure overseas candidates understand the updated eligibility requirements before applications are lodged.
