Short Term Graduate Work Visa NZ — 6 Months Open Work Rights for Graduates
Learn about New Zealand’s new Short Term Graduate Work Visa — who’s eligible, how to apply, and how it connects to longer-term work pathways in NZ.
New Zealand is introducing a brand-new visa category for international graduates: the Short Term Graduate Work Visa. Launching late 2026, this visa gives eligible graduates up to six months of open work rights in New Zealand after completing their studies — providing valuable time to find employment and explore longer-term pathways. This visa sits alongside the existing Post Study Work Visa and is specifically designed for graduates whose qualification level doesn't currently qualify them for the longer post-study pathway.
A stepping stone — a genuine, structured opportunity to transition from student to worker in New Zealand.
Who Is the Short Term Graduate Work Visa For?
This visa is for international students who:
- Completed a qualification at NZQCF Level 5, 6, or 7 in New Zealand
- Studied full-time for at least 24 weeks in New Zealand
- Hold a qualification that does not already qualify them for a Post Study Work Visa
- Have never previously held a Short Term Graduate Work Visa or Post Study Work Visa
English language, foundation, and bridging qualifications are not included — the study must be substantive, degree-pathway study.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Can You Do on This Visa?
The Short Term Graduate Work Visa provides open work rights for up to six months, meaning you can work for any employer across any sector — you are not tied to a specific job or employer before applying.
You must work under an employment agreement or contract for services. Business ownership is not permitted under this visa.
This flexibility makes it a practical option for graduates who are actively job-hunting and want legitimate, authorised time in New Zealand to secure a role. Can this lead to a Longer-Term Work in New Zealand?
One of the key purposes of the Short Term Graduate Work Visa is to give graduates a bridge toward longer-term work status. If you find employment with an accredited employer during your six months, you may be able to transition to an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) — which can in turn lead toward residency pathways.
This makes early job searching and employer engagement especially important from the moment you arrive.Important Limitations to Be Aware Of
Before applying, there are a few key restrictions to understand:
- One visa only: This visa cannot be extended, and a second one will not be granted. It is a single-use opportunity.
- No family sponsorship: Short Term Graduate Work Visa holders cannot sponsor a partner for a work visa or children for a Dependent Child Student Visa. Partners and children may be eligible for visitor visas — and dependent children can apply as international students in their own right. Partners may also apply for work visas independently on their own merits.
- Future study restrictions: If you hold or have previously held this visa and wish to return to study, your proposed programme must be at a higher NZQCF level than the qualification your visa was based on and must make you eligible for a Post Study Work Visa. Student visa holders who previously held this visa cannot change their programme or education provider unless this condition is met.
Can I apply if I've already had a Post Study Work Visa?
No. Anyone who has previously held either a Post Study Work Visa or a Short Term Graduate Work Visa is not eligible.
How long do I have to apply after finishing study?
You must submit your application within three months of your New Zealand student visa expiring.
Can my partner work while I'm on this visa?
Your partner cannot be sponsored for a work visa through this visa category, but they may be eligible to apply for a work visa independently.
What happens if I can't find work in six months?
The visa cannot be extended. If you are still in New Zealand after the six months, you would need to hold another valid visa. This makes early and active job searching important.
Does this visa count toward residency?
Not directly, but securing employment on this visa can lead to an Accredited Employer Work Visa, which may open residency pathways depending on your occupation and circumstances.
