These ancient sea floor sediments were originally formed 60 million years ago and have eroded into there boulder-like form through seashore exposure. According to Maori legend the boulders are the remains of calabashes, kumaras and eel baskets that washed ashore after a legendary shipwreck of the famed Araiteuru canoe at nearby Shag Point (Matakaea).
