NZ Post-Study Work Visa Changes 2026 | What Graduates Need to Know
Big Changes Coming for International Graduates in New Zealand!
Immigration New Zealand has announced two significant updates to post-study work options that will take effect from late 2026 — great news for international students planning their careers here after graduation.
A Brand-New Visa for Short-Term Graduates
A fresh visa option is on its way: the Short Term Graduate Work Visa. Designed for international students who completed their studies in New Zealand but whose qualification doesn’t currently qualify them for a Post Study Work Visa, this visa opens up six months of open work rights — enough time to job hunt and potentially transition into longer-term employment through an Accredited Employer Work Visa.
Who can apply?
To be eligible, you’ll need to:
- Hold a qualification at NZQCF Level 5, 6, or 7 studied full-time for a minimum of 24 weeks in New Zealand (English language, foundation, and bridging qualifications are excluded)
- Have at least NZD $5,000 in funds to support yourself
- Never previously held a Short Term Graduate Work Visa or Post Study Work Visa
- Apply within three months of your student visa expiring
- Provide a valid medical certificate and chest X-ray if required based on your intended stay
Applications open from late 2026.
A few important things to know:
This visa cannot be extended, and a second one cannot be granted. Holders must work under an employment agreement — running your own business isn’t permitted under this visa. Partners and children cannot be sponsored for work or student visas through this pathway, though visitor visa options may be available.
Returning to study after holding this visa is only possible if your proposed programme is at a higher NZQCF level and leads to Post Study Work Visa eligibility.
Post Study Work Visa — Expanded Eligibility
From late 2026, the Post Study Work Visa will also become accessible to a broader group of graduates. If you’ve completed a Graduate Diploma at NZQCF Level 7 in New Zealand and already hold a bachelor’s degree (earned anywhere in the world, at any point in time), you may now qualify.
Requirements for this new eligibility pathway:
- The Graduate Diploma must have been studied full-time in New Zealand for its entire duration
- You must have been enrolled for the full qualification — cross-crediting and recognition of prior learning don’t count toward eligibility
- You’ll need to supply your bachelor’s degree certificate and official academic transcript
- No International Qualification Assessment is required for overseas degrees
The visa duration will match the time spent studying the Graduate Diploma in New Zealand, up to a maximum of one year.
Partners and dependent children can be supported for visitor, work, or student visas while you hold this visa, subject to the usual requirements.
Note: the Post Study Work Visa can only be granted once per person — if you’ve held one before, you won’t be eligible again, regardless of your new qualification level.
What This Means for You
These changes reflect New Zealand’s commitment to attracting skilled international graduates and connecting them with genuine employment opportunities across the country.
