New, National Occupation List, to replace ANZSCO

The new National Occupation List (NOL) will replace the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) in a transitional approach as more occupations will be recognised and added to the NOL, and more visa categories will use the new system.

The first major step in this implementation of the NOL outlines occupations eligible for the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV). Jobs are grouped by similar tasks and responsibilities, with skill levels ranging from 1 (most skilled) to 5 (less skilled).

Why is this important?

From November 2025, some NOL occupations are added to the ANZSCO occupations under the AEWV scheme. Applicants must use the NOL occupation code if their job is listed on it. This applies to:

• AEWV applications on or after 3 November 2025
• AEWV job checks on or after 3 November 2025

If you are currently reaching the end of your AEWV's maximum stay on a low-skilled role, there may be a skilled role in the NOL for you, allowing you to seek an AEWV extension. Your employer will need a new job check and you will need a new visa application. New Zealand Shores can assist with both processes.
