Family Visa Applications Moving to New Online System from June 2026
Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has confirmed a major change to the way family members of temporary visa holders apply for visas. From 1 June 2026, all new applications in these categories will be processed exclusively through INZ’s enhanced Immigration Online platform (known as ADEPT) — replacing the existing system entirely for new submissions.
This transition is part of INZ’s wider Our Future Services programme, which aims to modernise the entire visa application process. While INZ frames this as a positive step towards efficiency, the reality is that system changes of this scale inevitably create confusion, delays, and risk for applicants who are unfamiliar with new platforms. New Zealand Shores is already fully prepared for the transition and is helping families navigate the change with confidence.

Which Visas Are Moving to the New System?
The following family-linked temporary visa categories will transition to enhanced Immigration Online from 1 June 2026:
Work Visas
- Partner of a Worker Work Visa
- Partner of Military Work Visa
- Partner of a Student Work Visa
- Partner of an NZ Scholarship Student Work Visa
Visitor Visas
- Partner of a Worker Visitor Visa
- Child of a Worker Visitor Visa
- Partner of a Student Visitor Visa
- Child of a Student Visitor Visa
- Partner of Military Visitor Visa
- Child of Military Visitor Visa
Student Visas
- Dependent Child Student Visa
If you or a family member holds a temporary visa in New Zealand and you plan to apply under any of these categories, this change affects you directly.
What Does This Transition Actually Mean for Applicants?
From 1 June 2026, every new application under the categories listed above will be routed automatically through the enhanced Immigration Online portal. The older system will no longer accept new submissions for these visa types.
There are several practical implications that applicants need to be aware of. The new interface is radically different from the old one. Working with a Licensed Immigration Adviser can reduce the administrative burden and potentially the financial impact of getting it wrong.
Why System Changes Create Risk for Visa Applicants
INZ’s digital upgrades are designed to improve processing speed and reduce administrative burden. In theory, that benefits everyone. In practice, however, platform transitions are one of the most common triggers for application errors, missed documents, and unnecessary processing delays.
Here’s why:
- Unfamiliar form layouts: Applicants who have used the old system may find that questions are phrased differently, fields have moved, or required evidence is listed in new places. Missing a single requirement because it appeared in an unexpected location can result in a request for further information — or worse, a decline.
- Evidence presentation changes: The enhanced system may prompt for documents in a different order or format than you’re used to. Uploading the wrong file type or missing a newly required attachment can stall your application.
- Timing pressure: If you are applying close to the 1 June transition date, you risk being caught between two systems. Knowing whether to submit under the old platform or wait for the new one is a tactical decision that can affect processing times.
- No dedicated support line for these visas: While INZ has a general contact centre, there is no priority phone line specifically for family visa applicants navigating the system change. Getting timely answers to questions about the new platform may be difficult.
How New Zealand Shores Guides You Through the Change
Our team has been working with INZ’s enhanced Immigration Online platform since it was first introduced in 2021 — well before this latest round of visa categories was added.
When you work with New Zealand Shores, you benefit from:
- Expert knowledge of the new system: We have lodged thousands of applications through the enhanced platform for student visas, visitor visas, Accredited Employer Work Visas, and Permanent Residence visas. We already know how the forms work, where the common pitfalls are, and how to present your evidence for the fastest possible processing.
- Accurate, complete applications: Our advisers prepare every application to INZ’s requirements before lodgement, reducing the risk of requests for further information and ensuring your file is decision-ready from the moment it is submitted.
- Strategic timing advice: If you have a draft in the old system, we can advise whether to submit it now or wait for the new platform — based on your specific circumstances, processing times, and visa conditions.
- End-to-end case management: From your initial eligibility assessment through to visa approval, we manage your application so you can focus on your family and your life in New Zealand.
- Licensed and accountable: As a licensed immigration advisory team, we are regulated by the Immigration Advisers Authority. You are protected by professional standards, a formal complaints process, and the assurance that your adviser is legally qualified to represent you.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the enhanced Immigration Online system?
It is INZ’s upgraded digital platform for visa applications. It uses smart forms that tailor questions to your visa type, allows you to track your application status online, and is designed for faster processing. INZ has been rolling it out in phases since 2021.
Will my existing application be affected?
No. If you have already submitted an application through the old system, it will continue to be processed there. Only new applications lodged from 1 June 2026 onward will go through the enhanced platform.
Can I still submit a paper application?
For now, yes — but INZ has indicated it may discontinue paper-based applications for these visa types as part of the transition. If you prefer paper lodgement, it is worth acting before the change takes effect or speaking with New Zealand Shores about online options.
Do I need a RealMe account?
Yes. The enhanced Immigration Online system requires a RealMe login. You can create one at realme.govt.nz. Your account does not need to be verified to start an application, but setting it up in advance avoids delays.
What if I’m not confident using online systems?
This is one of the most common concerns we hear. New Zealand Shores can handle the entire application process on your behalf — from form completion to evidence upload to lodgement. You do not need to navigate the system yourself.
How long will processing take in the new system?
INZ has not published specific processing times for these visa types under the enhanced platform. Historically, new system rollouts can cause short-term processing fluctuations. Lodging a complete, well-prepared application is the single best way to avoid delays, regardless of which system is in use.
Can a licensed immigration adviser lodge on my behalf?
Yes. The enhanced system is specifically designed to support licensed advisers and lawyers who submit applications on behalf of clients. New Zealand Shores regularly uses the “apply on behalf” function to manage family visa applications end to end.
