Migrant Exploitation Protection Work Visa (MEPV)

A visa option if you believe you are experiencing exploitation in the work place.


There is a special visa for those who need to leave their job, while workplace exploitation is being investigated, called the Migrant Exploitation Protection Work Visa (MEPV)

What is the Migrant Exploitation Protection Work Visa for?

This visa category is to ensure you are keeping a lawful status while you are not working for your employer. This to allow an applicant to keep working while the workplace is being investigated for potential exploitation.

What is required for an MEPV?

You must have a “Report of Exploitation Assessment Letter” before applying for this visa. You must raise your concerns formally and wait for the assessment before Report of Exploitation Assessment letter is given to you

You must apply for the visa within a month of receiving the letter and include a copy of the letter with your application
Police certificates and medicals are not required to apply for this visa but you must be of good health and character. You must provide a copy of your passport.

There are no fees associated with applying for this visa

What are the conditions imposed on an MEPV?

Once the MEPV has been approve, you can work for any employer in New Zealand. The visa is valid for up to 6 months.

Important note

Partners and dependent children cannot be included in your application for a MEPV but they may apply in their own right for a visa based on your status. They will not need to provide police certificates or medicals or pay an application fee.
