Changes to ANZSCO (classification of occupations)

Update to the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations

ANZSCO is getting an update, and so is the classification of certain occupations. This could be good news for certain categories of workers.

What are the changes?

Version 1.3 of the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) is due to be released by mid-2020. ANZSCO is used to determine the skill level of an occupation, and what the qualification and/or work experience are, to be deemed qualified. Before these changes, Immigration New Zealand has moved certain occupations from skill-level 4-5 to skill level 1-3, effective immediately.

What this means for you

If your occupation/job is low-skilled but on the list of exceptions (below) published by Immigration New Zealand, it will be considered mid-skilled as long as you find a job in New Zealand at or above the median income threshold (NZD $25, due to increase to NZD $25.50 in November 2019).

If you have an Essential Skill work visa application in process

If your application is currently in process, the job is low-skilled, on the list, and you are offered at or above the median income, it will be assessed immediately as mid-skilled.

This could be your chance to move to New Zealand, and we have highlighted the occupations that we see most frequently.
